What is Magnus?

Founded in 2013 and based in New York, Magnus gives everyone – from curious newcomers to seasoned collectors – an easy way to track, discover, and share their art experiences through the Magnus app.

Combining cutting-edge AI with years of meticulous data gathering and manual entry, we’ve built the world’s only platform that shows prices from both auctions and galleries. Our AI technology guides you through the art world, recommending works you’ll love and exhibitions you won’t want to miss.

We believe transparency is good for the art world. Magnus helps it grow — by bringing in new collectors and giving existing buyers a simple, powerful way to enjoy art even more.

Why are you relaunching?

When COVID shut down galleries and museums, users could no longer take photos and explore art through our app. So we made the decision to take the app offline. But we never stopped believing in our mission: making the art market more transparent, more accessible, and open to everyone.

With the rise of AI and powerful new image recognition technology, we knew it was time to bring Magnus back — stronger, smarter, faster and more useful than ever before.

Where does Magnus get its data?

It’s a blend of crowdsourcing, AI, and a lot of manual work. Our users provide the foundation by sharing information, which we verify, enrich, and organize by hand—then enhance with machine learning. The art world is fragmented — there’s no single source for everything you want to know about an artist.

Biographies are scattered across gallery sites, artist pages, Wikipedia, and more. Auction databases like Artnet or Artprice only cover a fraction of the market, leaving out gallery prices. Finding nearby art venues often means relying on blogs, handouts, or luck.

That’s why we built Magnus. One app that brings it all together: artist bios, prices, locations. Powered by your contributions, refined by AI, and completed with meticulous manual work — so you can discover and enjoy art effortlessly.

Why do you offer your service for free?

Our mission is simple: make the art world more accessible. By offering Magnus for free, we aim to grow the market. Newcomers get expert-level tools to navigate the art scene, while seasoned collectors enjoy the convenience of having everything at their fingertips. More access, more knowledge, more people enjoying art.

How accurate are prices?

Auction house websites and catalogues provide prices for the secondary market. For the primary market, we rely on user submissions. Every price is reviewed for accuracy — we cross-check, verify, and reject random or false entries. Often, users share official price lists, which helps us maintain reliable data.

We also trust the power of the crowd. When several trusted users submit the same price around the same time, that’s a strong signal of accuracy. Trusted users have a track record of correct entries, are active on the app, and contribute across a variety of artists—not just one.

Thanks to these safeguards, no price goes public without verification, keeping our information accurate and trustworthy.

How do I report infringement of my copyright?

Copyright provides a set of exclusive rights for the creators of original works of authorship (for example, books, music, art). This often includes the right to reproduce the work, display or perform it publicly, distribute it, create derivative works, and other rights that may vary by country.

If you believe that your copyright is being infringed and you’d like to have content removed, we have made it easy for you. Please visit our copyright page to submit a copyright removal notice to us. You can submit a request quickly by sending an email with the relevant information, or provide notice by any other means specified in the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.

When you submit a request, please make sure that the information provided is true and accurate. Knowingly submitting false infringement notices can result in liability for damages under section 512(f) of the DMCA or similar laws in other countries.

Can I submit a copyright removal request if I don’t own the copyright in the work?

No. Only the owner of a copyright (or an authorized agent acting on their behalf) can submit a copyright removal request.  Before submitting a copyright removal request, you should consider whether you are the copyright owner of that content.

Am I the copyright owner of a work?

Copyrights are generally owned by whoever creates the work of expression, though in some cases, the owner may be someone else if the work was created by an employee or contractor. The original owner can also transfer ownership of the copyright to others.

Note that owning or possessing a physical work doesn’t necessarily mean that you own the copyright in that work.  For example, if you buy a collection of old photographs, that doesn’t necessarily mean you own the copyright in those images (though you may).

Can I edit my biographical data?

Yes. You can contact us to do this directly through the app. Just hit the “Report” button below your name, and you will be able to get in touch with us. Alternatively, you can just email us on info@magnus.net.

Can I add new artworks?

Yes! For larger submissions (over 50 artworks), please send them to us via email at info@magnus.net. Make sure your images are in JPG format and include full details: dimensions, material, and price. We’ll take care of the rest.

I would like to add new works. How can I do this?

If you’d like to add new artworks, simply send them to info@magnus.net. Please include images in JPG, PNG format along with full details like dimensions, material, and price. Many galleries also share their preview PDFs — that works just as well. We’ll take care of the rest.

I don’t want to see my prices online. Can I delete them?

Gallery prices are submitted by our active user community who support our mission of transparency. We verify and enter this information carefully. For this reason, we do not delete prices from our database.

My prices aren’t right. Can I change them?

Yes, you can. Next to the price, you’ll see an “Add details” icon — use it to submit the correct price. After verification, we’ll update it.

If you spot a price that’s clearly wrong (not just outdated), please let us know. You can either email us or use the “Report” button below the artwork in the app. Since there’s a lot of manual work involved, occasional errors happen, and we appreciate your help in keeping the data accurate.

I’m not listed on your map. Can you please add me?

We aim to be as comprehensive as possible and update our data daily — but sometimes galleries get missed. If your gallery isn’t listed, please email us with the following: contact person, email address, website, gallery location, general email, and phone number. We’ll make sure to add you.

Can I value a particular artwork?

Magnus can guide you in understanding an artwork’s value by showing comparable pieces in our price database. This gives you a clear overview of the artist’s price level. When comparing, consider key factors like:

  • Year of creation
  • Material
  • Size
  • Condition
  • Where it was sold (gallery or auction)

Please note: we don’t offer individual valuations or customized services and won’t respond to email requests for price estimates.

I found an artwork that I’m interested in. Whom should I contact to purchase it?

If you found something you want to buy, contact the gallery or auction house who listed it. The contact information for both are displayed in our app. You can send an email directly from the system or call them up. We don’t take any commission for this. It’s between you and the gallery.

I would like to find potential buyers for an artwork I own. Whom should I contact?

Start by checking if there’s an active market for your artist — see if galleries or auction houses are currently offering similar works. Then, reach out to the gallery or auction house where your artwork was previously sold. You can find their contact details directly in the Magnus app.

Be prepared to provide images of the artwork, condition reports, invoices, and any documentation proving ownership and authenticity. These are typically required before any further discussions.

I am an artist seeking representation. How can Magnus help me?

We don’t represent or exhibit artists. However, we can offer personal advice: look for galleries that align with your work. Start by researching which artists they already show — if you notice similarities to your own art, that’s a good sign. Reach out to those artists first. If they like your work, a recommendation from them can open more doors than a cold email to the gallery.

Keep in mind: not all galleries are actively seeking new artists for representation.

Are you hiring?

We aren’t actively looking for new hires. The best way to introduce yourself is by using our app. We are super passionate about our product and enjoy seeing this with everyone who would like to work for us.

How does the Magnus technology work?

From snapping a photo to uncovering the story, it’s just three simple steps:

  1. See something you love?
Open the app and tap the image button.
  2. AI creates a digital fingerprint.
Our technology analyzes the artwork, matching it against millions of images in our database.
  3. Get instant results.
In seconds, Magnus identifies the artwork and artist, giving you details like prices, dimensions, and materials.

And here’s the best part: the more you use Magnus, the smarter it gets. Our AI learns from your searches to recommend galleries, exhibitions, and artworks that match your taste — personalized just for you.

Does every art work match?

Most of the time, yes. But some artworks take longer to identify. If your photo doesn’t match right away, it won’t be ignored. Our team will review it and update the database — that’s how Magnus keeps improving, combining AI with crowdsourcing, thanks to you.

One thing to remember: Magnus doesn’t detect the size of artworks. So if a piece exists in different formats (like editions), make sure to check the dimensions to find the correct price.

Is there an Android version?

Not yet, but it’s definitely on our roadmap.
